In this world there exist alchemists, people who study and perform the art of alchemical transmutation - to manipulate objects and transform one object into another. They are bounded by the basic law of alchemy: in order to gain something you have to sacrifice something of the same value.

The main character is the famousalchemist Edward Elric - also known as the Fullmetal Alchemist - who almost lost his little brother, Alphonse, in an alchemical accident. Edward managed to attach his brother's soul to a large suit of armor. While he did manage to save his brother's life, he paid the terrible price of his limbs.

To get back what they've lost, the brothers embark on a journey to find the Philosopher's Stone that is said to amplify the powers of an alchemist enormously.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a re-telling of the story from the manga point of view.

Enjoyed this more than the first anime. Followed the manga more closely and the ending was very satisfying.

I'm currently watching this. 17 episodes in. I don't like these new Xing characters, but other than that I'm enjoying this as much as I enjoyed the first series back in the day.

FMA Brotherhood is pretty much my favorite anime ever. It tops the original series in every way imaginable. While they manged to do a decent job with the story in the first series given that they made it up, the true manga story is written so much better and it shows in Brotherhood. The Homunculi and supporting characters are just awesome.

And I hope that the Xing people grow on you! Shao May is pretty forgettable but Lin is such a badass.

Thus far I've avoided this series because I felt the first anime series was boring.

I know you avoid shows that are 50 plus episodes but you should give this one a try. Like Mari said, it's a lot better than the first series and the ending is very satisfying.
